The English terminology of TCM Spinal Treatment Therapy

The project of Spinal Treatment Therapy (Zhengji) as part of Chinese Medicine was officially approved in 2006 by the Chinese government, In order to let the project to engage into the global traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) community, we need to set an official English name for the project.

The World Spinal Health Association was officially established, we have been authorized as the Singapore National Committee. In future, we need to prepare English documents in order to promote to Western world. We suggest to apply the term 'Spinal Manipulation Therapy', 'Spinal Manipulative Therapy', 'Spinal Manipulative Medicine to replace the terms of 'Chiropractor', 'Chiropractic' or 'Zhengji'.

Chiropractor or Chiropractic are professions who has graduated from Chiropractic colleges which are usually degree course, one who are not trained in this profession should not use the term of these.

Spinal Treatment Therapy in Chinese medicine has a far long history than Western Chiropractic medicine. Some may not agreed with us.

But according to written by Professor Yizong Wei (The book has enrich the studies of Spinal Treatment in China, and bring the Chinese Spinal Therapy to a new scientific platform, promote the development of its modernization.), the modern back pain related diseases were recorded on 'Classical Text of 52 Formulas' (believed to be the first Chinese medicine classical text in history), which was written 3rd century B.C. Similar symptoms were also recorded in 《Classical Text of the Yellow Emperor》and 《Classical Text of Acupuncture and Moxibustion》.

The application of spinal manipulation methods were also recorded in《Treatise on the Causes and Manifestations of Diseases》, compiled by Yuanfang Cao on year 610. This classical text recorded many manipulation methods which are still using today.

Spinal treatment in Chinese medicine include of three important principles: treating the tendons, adjusting the bones and Qigong exercise. And also consist of 8 different types of spinal manipulation methods. It has a very long and deep history, culture and contents.

So, there isn’t any necessary for us to use any of these terms like Chiropractic、Chiropractor、Osteopathy、Osteopath etc.

Chinese academia may not understand English so well, so some of them may still use the term chiropractic or so, or some even use direct translation of ‘Zhengji’. ‘Zhengji’ is same as ‘Tuina’, are direct translate from Mandarin, but many may not understand the term of ‘Zhengji’.

We suggest applying the term 'Spinal Manipulation Therapy', 'Spinal Manipulative Therapy', 'Spinal Manipulative Medicine to replace the terms of 'Chiropractor', 'Chiropractic' or 'Zhengji'.
